In this region during the last decades people had stopped to weave hats themselves, but only work the palm leaves, grown in their own fields, into weavable fibres and sell them to the big hat manufacturers in Montecristi and Cuenca.

This is the only region where the Toquilla Palm (Carludovica Palmata) is grown.

Ecua-Andino has laid the foundations of a new developpment in this region: visiting the villages and making good offers to buy woven hats at a good price we could reactivate the older people to show the younger generations the hat weaving. A weaver working a regular 8 hours a day can earn enough to feed the family. Our brand new model "Hippie", the only Panama Hat that is not woven but crochet, is exclusively produced in this region.

We visit the villages regularly to talk about quality and to buy the produced hats. We developp the Panama Hat production in this region through a buying guarantee at a fix price in US-dollars. Through our woldwide clients buying our hats we help to create work in the rural sector at the west coast of Ecuador.
